Unlocking Efficiency: The Benefits and Applications of Heat Exchangers in Industrial and Commercial Heating

Heat exchangers are effective devices designed to efficiently transfer heat between various fluids or between solids and fluids. Widely embraced across industries, they play a pivotal role in both heating and cooling processes, waste heat recovery, and enhancing energy efficiency. In this comprehensive blog post, we delve into the myriad benefits and versatile applications of heat exchangers in diverse sectors

heat exchanger uses in industrial and commercial heating

Benefits of Heat Exchangers

Energy Efficiency: Heat exchangers are champions of energy conservation, significantly reducing energy consumption and costs. They achieve this by capturing and repurposing heat from one process for another. For instance, they can harness heat from a boiler or furnace exhaust gases to preheat incoming air or water, minimizing the need for additional fuel, and increasing system efficiency.

Environmental Sustainability: By curbing greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants, heat exchangers contribute to environmental protection. Their ability to recover waste heat reduces the amount of fuel burned, subsequently diminishing the release of carbon dioxide and other harmful substances into the atmosphere.

Process Enhancement: Heat exchangers are invaluable in optimizing heating processes. They maintain ideal temperature and pressure conditions for various operations, ensuring higher product yields and improved quality. For example, they can regulate the temperature of chemical reactions or fermentation processes, yielding superior results.

Applications of Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers find diverse applications in multiple industries:

Process Heat: Industries like manufacturing, refining, and mining rely on process heat for their operations. Heat exchangers transfer heat from hot fluids to cold ones or from hot solids to fluids.

For example, they can convert steam into hot water for washing or produce steam for power generation and heating, or separating the primary flow from the secondary flow where the secondary flow may be corrosive i.e, swimming pool heating.

Food and Beverage: In this sector, heat exchangers perform tasks such as pasteurization, sterilization, cooking, cooling, freezing, and drying. They maintain precise temperatures and prevent contamination, ensuring food safety and product quality. For instance, plate heat exchangers pasteurize milk quickly, while shell-and-tube heat exchangers sterilize juice thoroughly.

Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology: Heat exchangers are indispensable in processes like fermentation, distillation, crystallization, extraction, and purification. They uphold the optimal conditions required for these reactions, enhancing production and product quality. Spiral heat exchangers are adept at regulating fermentation temperatures, while scraped-surface heat exchangers prevent fouling and clogging during crystallization and extraction.

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning): Buildings such as offices, hotels, hospitals, and schools rely on HVAC systems to maintain indoor comfort and air quality. Heat exchangers are essential components, transferring heat between air and water or air and refrigerant. For instance, air-to-water heat exchangers provide heating, while air-to-refrigerant heat exchangers deliver cooling.

At Tubman Heating we are partnered with two excellent and reputable manufacturers to bring both gasketed and brazed heat exchanger options to our customers. We are also able to have a customised heat exchange system made to order to meet specific requirements.

Reflex Heat Exchangers

Reflex Longtherm heat exchangers can be adapted to almost any requirement profile. They are available in a wide range of sizes, embossments and connection types, offering the best compromise between low flow resistance and highly efficient heat exchange. This allows Longtherm heat exchangers to cover all major energy applications.

Longtherm gasketed heat exchangers are efficient for very low temperature spread and high output ranges above 1MW. Due to the ease of dismantling, the screwed plate (gasketed) heat exchangers are easily maintained and can be extended by adding plate packages. The seals, plate material and frames can be configured based on your application requirements.

Longtherm brazed plate heat exchangers are subjected to a special soldering process that ensures robustness and permanent connection to the plates. This allows the heat exchangers to withstand high temperatures up to 230⁰C and, depending on the type, permissible operating temperatures up to 30 bar.

Heizer has been associated with quality water heating products for several years. Basic design principles ensure energy efficient operations.

Gasketed inspectable plate heat exchangers are designed and built with materials and solutions that ensure a superior level of efficiency and longevity in industrial processes. The plates are made of high quality materials which makes it possible to reach an optimum overall heat exchange figure and guarantees resistance against corrosion. The corrugated plates makes the fluid in the device move turbulently and guarantees an elevated heat exchange result. The gaskets are available in several materials, adapted to the different applications (gasoline, oil, alimentary fluids, aggressive fluids, high temperature fluids, etc.) and required performance.

The brazed plate heat exchangers are used in heating, cooling and heat recuperation systems. The quality of the parts and the brazing process, which is carried out with care, make a trustworthy product. The special design of the plates allows for superior performance to be obtained in terms of heat exchange and reduced heat loss. It also gives the product excellent resistance to high temperatures and pressures.
